These mouth types are a deep port that acts as a tongue trap of sorts.  It is defined to center the tongue and keep it there.  The depth of the post allows for direct bar pressure.

These bits work best on horses with tongue issues.  Deep ports allow room so if a “busy tongue” is caused by mouthpiece pressure, deep ports will go a long way to alleviating that issue and also stopping their tongue from blocking the action of the bit.
